The reason for the Trust Fund is that, we are seeking in raising money for a grade 2 one-room school in war torn Bosnia. In 1999 Steve was on tour in Bosnia with the King’s own tank regiment. During his spare time along with other members of the Canadian army he help to restore the building. The monies are to be used to supply the school with desks and equipment that they need to bring education to the town of Lajsa, which is approximately 20km east of Velika Kladusa.

The school was dedicated to the memory of these two fine individuals on Saturday 21 march 2002

The money raised will be sent to Major Mann who is Deputy Commanding Officer 1 CER

The funds will be used on the following projects related to children and schools - i.e..e. books, furniture, toys, musical instruments (though there may be some priority allocated - children may need the books and stationery more than instruments)

Then we hope to have the fund direct it efforts to the following areas co-ordinated as part of the Battle Group humanitarian assistance plan.

  • Projects related to health care - clinics, drugs, food aid
  • Projects related to infrastructure - water, electricity etc
  • Community Assistance Projects - cultural sites, sports teams and facilities etc

As long as #One Combat engineers are serving all around the world we know that they will need help with their humanitarian aid projects.

The Steve and Leah Oliver Trust Fund has completed its mission and is no longer accepting donations.

Thank You, the friends and family of Steve and Leah Oliver.

The Oliver School

We are now at the end of the 2003 - 2004 school year for "The Oliver School". It has been a good year for the school 23 students attended from grade 1 to grade 5.

Number One Combat Engineers Regiment (1CER) on their last Roto to Bosnia visited the school on day two of the new term and delivered the school supplies that had been purchased with your kind donations. (Late in 2003 we were given full charitable status so all future donations can be tax deductible)

In April Master Warrant Officer CC Grant made the 4 hour drive from his military base to deliver candies to the students somewhere along the way he has managed to find two computers that needed homes. Our school boasts a full supply cupboard and two computers while the other schools in the district have chalk boards.

Now that the Canadian involvement in Bosnia is reduced to a limited number of troops we can not ask these men and women to give up their spare time to travel to the school. We do know that many of them do go out of their way to include a drive by.

The Trust Fund has a good friend in the School Director Mr. Behudin Hodzic. Behudin is responsible for the running of all the schools in the district. We communicate via a translator Boris Gavric an employee of Jacobs Canada and family friend. The monies to maintain the school are sent direct to Mr. Behudin and he via e-mail reports his spending .As most of our e-mails are copied to various members of the armed forces ,we receive pictures back from soldiers on their visits to the schools and can see the results of yours and our labour .
